Classes
Our classes run from September to April and are 6 weeks long.
Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9
p.m. offering open studio on Saturday mornings. Open
studio is not mandatory, but definitely recommended, as
it gives the students the freedom to practice what they
have learned and to experiment literally "play in
the mud".
The class is limited to four people
per session, consisting of hand built objects, wedging
clay, throwing and or centering clay on the wheel,
pulling and shaping of a vessel. During this time
cylinders are made, bowls, cups with handles, lidded
vessels and plates are created. Students discover that
clay is like a canvas, and that they can even paint
designs on their pieces before firing and or glazing.
Many students return for another session of classes and
more.
We use kick wheels at Frog Creek,
with roughly 140 lbs. of concrete on the wheel to be
kicked, which in turn rotates the upper plate where the
ball of clay is centered and shaped into a piece of art.
So if you don't have a lot of upper body muscle, you will
have after 6 weeks. Not to mention your legs!
We also offer special classes to
those who have a physical disability, most of what we learn is how to wedge the clay and hand build similar
items that students make on the wheel. The whole object
of our classes is that everyone can work with clay, and
have fun. You just need to want to "play in the
mud."
We have made many friends due to
our classes, and many students have made new friends with
our students. It is a very non-threatening environment,
and even the instructor can produce a bad piece of
pottery!
Some students find the class very
relaxing and fun. I try to bake something for break time,
the coffeepot is always on, and the fridge always has pop
and water in it.
We guarantee you will leave with at
least 6 proud pieces, however most students produce a
good 12 or more in the 6 week session.
The cost of one 6-week session is $180.00. This covers all materials a student needs, such
as clay, tools, glazes and kiln space.
